How does Ontario's full EPR transition affect food bank inbound volumes and AAFC food waste reduction targets?
Two cascading effects identified. Ontario's Blue Box transition (O. Reg. 391/21) shifts collection costs to producers by 2026, incentivizing lighter packaging and reduced over-packaging. This directly reduces surplus food packaging entering the food bank supply chain. Simultaneously, AAFC's Food Waste Reduction Challenge funds ($20M, 2024–2027) target exactly this intersection — projects that reduce packaging waste while preserving food shelf life.
